Jewels of the Beaten Path

Jewels of the Beaten Path

About this experience

"Discover the architectural jewels of Buenos Aires that most tourists miss. In this distinctive walking tour, first, we will connect some unique spots that are not in the touristic circuit. Then, you will enjoy discovering the jewels of a neighborhood (not listed in guidebooks) that you would never have the opportunity to explore without knowing a local. We will visit the following: The second most-beautiful book shop in the world: an old theater that was converted into a book shop. A prominent British periodical named it second in its 2008 list of the World's Ten Best Bookshops. Just stepping inside this former grand theater will take your breath away.

A massive Victorian structure that many people stop and look at in wonder: A fantastic palace of more than 300,000 lustrous, multicolored tiles and glazed and enamel bricks.

An incredible large shopping mall that used to be the city’s central wholesale fruit and vegetable market. The original art deco building & structure remain largely untouched.

Impressive buildings with a variety of architectural styles (including art nouveau).

The area of Carlos Gardel – the most famous tango singer in history-: House facades and shops covered in “fileteado” artwork. A creative art, one-of-a-kind, full of vivid colored ornaments and symmetries. The style of painting associated with Buenos Aires that has much to do with tango and that has been part of the culture of the Porteños (inhabitants of Buenos Aires) since the beginnings of the 20th century.

Carlos Gardel museum (closed on Tuesdays - entrance fee included-): The chorizo (sausage) style house where he lived.

Also, expect to view creative street art and murals painted by local artists, tango clothes, and shoe store, Argentine crafts, etc. for a most memorable experience.

Availability: Tours run every day (except on some holidays). Morning tour starts on or after 10:00 am. Please message me before booking to confirm availability."

I am a Buenos Aires native who loves interacting with people and sharing my deep knowledge and passion for this city: its history, art, architecture, food, literature etc. My Past and Present occupations: I was a bilingual assistant for a medical tourism company, history research assistant, and an adviser to a travel magazine about places and activities in Argentina. I have taken classes in Argentina's literature and history, tourism, History of Art, Latin American Art, architecture and history of Buenos Aires.

Each of my tours lasts around 3 hours. We could take longer, as I am flexible to accommodate the needs and questions you might have. And if you want to linger a while, don't worry -- this is your tour and, because I only book small parties, you can linger all you want. This is not your typical "hurry-hurry" tour.

This was the first time that I used Localife and I'm really glad that I did! Our group of four was lucky enough to have Elisa as a guide to see some great places in Cabllito. It was a perfect three hours that we could have happily stretched out to a whole day. Elisa was really fun, had perfect English and knew a lot of history about the area. For anyone looking for a wonderful companion as you explore Caballito you'd do very well to choose her. We had a truly excellent day.

I had an excellent tour through Caballito with Henrique. What a great lady Everything was so well organised, and I really enjoyed seeing the city through Elisa's eyes, she told me so much about the city's history and showed me places I wouldn't have known to go myself. We talked like old friends! Even went overtime we were so deep in conversation (sorry Elisa...but thanks for the great chats). A really great experience, I'd definitely recommend everyone book her quick smart!

As a gracious and delightful hostess, Elisa is rightfully so, the friendly local! She enthusiastically shared her love of Buenos Aires its history and culture and made my visit most memorable off the beaten path. I enjoyed visiting the neighborhoods and listening to her stories and lesser known facts about Caballito as a whole. After her tour I’m excited to book my next trip!

Having been lucky enough to do three of Elisa´s tours I can´t recommend her highly enough. This tour is great to see a unique part of Buenos Aires´ history and especially become acquainted with the famous Carlos Gardel! I feel that after doing Elisa´s tours that I have seen the "real" Buenos Aires and had the bonus of being able to discuss differrent topics with a native Porteño! 5 stars!

If you want to experience Buenos Aires a very different way from the tour books, try Jewels off the Beaten Path. Elisa will show you The Abasto Mall where there is a kosher McDonalds and beautiful architecture. You will feel the real pulse and "feel" of the city as you walk with Elisa and see the neighborhood of Carlos Gardel, the King of Tango. The best is that Elisa really knows her city and she is always learning more about Buenos Aires! Her talk is not a talk she gives by memory but by love!At the end of your "experience" you will really have a feel for this amazing city
